Not at all. Everyone needs help now and then. You already have some strengths that you’ve used before, that for whatever reason isn’t working right now. Perhaps this problem feels overwhelming and is making it difficult to access your past strengths. In our work together, I’ll help you identify what those strengths are and how to implement them again in what is happening now.
I work with teens and women. I love helping my clients improve their self-esteem, calm anxiety, and improve family relationships. I have seen the best success working with highly motivated clients who are committed and invested in the work involved with their own personal growth.
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.”
Therapy sessions are usually 45 minutes and once a week. Family sessions may take up to an hour. Each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therefore, therapy will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
On average, my clients attend 20 therapy sessions with me. However, some only need a couple sessions and get what they need in a shorter period of time while other stay with me for years. This really depends on your circumstances and how therapy is helping you. We can continue working together as long as you feel it is beneficial. I would be happy to discuss your unique circumstances and my thoughts on how we can help you achieve your goals for therapy.
First of all, I think it’s great that you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. After all, we only see each other for a session a week. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.
I often incorporate family sessions so you have an opportunity to be a part of your child’s healing. After an individual session, ask her how her session went and let her know she can always speak with you. Many parents take the ride to or back from therapy as an opportunity to do something their teen enjoys. I value interactions with parents and welcome questions regarding therapy for your teen.
I will first meet with her parents and together we will determine whether to start off as a family or seeing her individually. It is always an effective option to have family sessions and incorporate them in addition to the individual therapy work.
